When Silence fills the Space
I grew up in Paris, while many see it as a “romantic” city, to me, as a child it felt big, noisy, and not particularly kid-friendly. But what big city is? Luckily, we lived near the Bois de Vincennes, a vast park where my mom would take my brother and I almost every afternoon after school so we could burn off some energy.
I didn’t experience true, wild, boundless nature until I was a young adult. My first encounter came during a ski trip to the French Alps. Sitting on a steep chairlift, I saw and felt how immense nature can be. The scale of the mountains, the endless horizon, the sharp, luminous colors… and the silence. The soft wind brushing through the pine trees…. that was silence for me.
My second unforgettable “ silence” experience came in the Atacama Desert, in Chile. It is incredibly vast, empty horizons for miles, barely no human activity. Now that was REAL silence, so much that my brain had never experienced such “noise emptiness”. It was a stunning physical experience.
That’s why I am drawn to hiking in nature. It’s not only visually rewarding, it also offers my mind room for clarity and reflection. It is when I feel most inspired to take photographs. This also probably explains why I’m not particularly drawn to street or city photography :)
